Israeli Triathletes Removed From Europe Triathlon Cup in Ireland

Last week, four Israeli athletes were removed from the Europe Triathlon Cup in Derry, Northern Ireland, due to safety concerns.

According to a report by the BBC, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) gathered intelligence regarding potential threats two days before the event. The host club, North West Triathlon Club (NWTC), stated it only learned of the entries when the provisional start list went online and informed Triathlon Ireland and Europe Triathlon that it could not support Israeli participation. It further stated that it would be unsafe for the Israeli athletes, fellow participants, volunteers, and spectators to proceed with their inclusion.

Following discussions between the local organizers, World Triathlon, and the Israeli Triathlon Association, a collective decision was made to withdraw the four competitors from Saturday's start list.

The NWTC stated its position was not directed at anyone’s religion or ethnicity, but rather concerned the international sporting representation of the State of Israel while Palestinians continue to suffer. Conversely, the Israeli national team coach noted that police had previously assured them weeks earlier that participation would be safe. The Israeli Triathlon Association (ITA) is now considering legal action over the withdrawal.

While this was a locally hosted event, decisions involving international sports federations frequently carry broader political complexity. Since the conflict in Gaza began in 2023, sporting bodies worldwide have increasingly faced challenges balancing athlete safety, public order, and neutral international participation.
